Origins of the Canton
Benefiting from both a riverine and an inland area, Wouri Bwélé Canton counts around ten villages on both sides of the Wouri River, its nourishing source and main communication route. Covering 237 km² at the edge of the Douala 5th district, the canton is bordered by the village of Bonangando to the south, Ngombe (Bassa canton) to the north, Wouri Bosua Canton to the west, Abo Nord and Abo Sud cantons to the south-west, and the Bakoko canton of Dibombari to the east.
A true laboratory of coexistence, the canton stands out for its strong blend of native and newcomer populations, and an educational and healthcare infrastructure developed early thanks to the establishment of Protestant missions. Its sixteen villages, connected by strong family ties, are spread between riverine and inland areas. On 28 June 2026, this canton hosted a memorable leg of the NGONDO 2026 Caravan, marked by intense popular enthusiasm around the year's theme: "Anticipation and Vigilance".
